•A synergistic heterostructure-defect strategy is proposed for U(VI) photoreduction.•The g-C3N4/CeO2-x shows efficient U(VI) reduction under visible light.•The separation rate and lifetime of the photoinduced carrier were greatly improved.•The photoreaction mechanism of U(VI) by g-C3N4/CeO2-x is proposed.
