I Divari Territoriali in Italia Tra Crisi Economiche, Ripresa Ed Emergenza Sanitaria [regional Inequality in Italy in the Face of Economic Crises, Recovery, and the Health Emergency]

Italian Abstract: L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è fornire un quadro statistico aggiornato sui principali indicatori relativi ai divari territoriali tra Mezzogiorno e Centro Nord a partire dal 2007. Si mostra che la doppia crisi (2008-09 e 2012-13) ha ampliato i differenziali di sviluppo economico tra aree; la caduta più forte del PIL nel Mezzogiorno è stata determinata da un calo più marcato degli investimenti e si è associata ad andamenti del mercato del lavoro meno favorevoli. La base produttiva del Mezzogiorno – che ha mostrato segnali di ristrutturazione meno intensi di quelli presenti nel resto del Paese – rimane poco adeguata per competere in un mondo globalizzato. Anche la recente pandemia di Covid-19 rischia di avere conseguenze negative più durature nel Mezzogiorno a causa della fragilità del suo settore produttivo.English Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide an updated overview of the economic divide between the South and the Centre-North of Italy from 2007 onwards. We show that the double-dip recession (2008-09 and 2012-13) has widened the gap between the two areas. The sharpest fall in GDP in the South was caused by a marked drop in investment and is associated with less favourable labour market trends. The production base of southern Italy - which has not undergone the same level of restructuring as the rest of the country - remains unfit to compete in a globalized world. The recent COVID-19 pandemic may have more long-lasting negative consequences in the South due to the fragility of its economy.
