Cost minimized hydrogen from solar and wind – Production and supply in the European catchment area

•MENA-region and locations at the North Sea obtain lowest hydrogen supply cost.•Supply potential more than ten times higher in the MENA-region than in Europe.•Minimized onsite hydrogen supply cost of 3 €2020/kgH2 (2030) and 2 €2020/kgH2 (2050).•Germany can cover own hydrogen demand in 2050 for less than 4.5 €2020/kgH2.•Low cost storage (salt caverns) are crucial for a significant supply cost reduction.
