•We link climate data and hydrology models with grid planning and operation models.•High temperatures can increase grid capacity needs and cost.•Capacity needs and costs can be reduced by increased hydropower and flexible load.•Drought and unexpected high load reduce available capacity for contingency events.•Climate change is important to consider in future grid planning.
