Assessment of photosynthetic efficiency of greater yam and white yam subjected to elevated carbon dioxide

•Greater yam and white yam responded positively to elevated CO2 (400–1000 ppm).•Most of the photosynthetic parameters increased steadily without any down-regulation at the highest concentration.•Physiological water use efficiency was optimized at the highest concentration through the virtue of reduced stomatal conductance and transpiration.
