Introduction to residuals and estimation by principal components analysis

In previous articles, we have primarily introduced PCA as a method for visualisation, and this is probably its most common application in modern chemometrics, especially in areas such as metabolomics,(1) heritage science(2) or food science3 where there is a need to explore large multivariate datasets, often involving spectroscopy or chromatography and huge numbers of variables.
