•Resistivity of (PbzSn1-z)0.8In0.2Te solid solutions with various z was studied.•Metallic conductivity observed for z ≤ 0.4, activation conductivity for z ≥ 0.5.•Conductivity type change induced by the shift of indium impurity band.•Superconductivity was observed in samples with metallic conductivity.•Superconductivity persists if activation energy is lower than superconducting gap
