•The core-branched FeOOH-CNTs were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method.•The confinement effect and electronic of CNTs can make FeOOH dispersed evenly.•The FeOOH-CNTs delivers high specific capacitance and superior rate capability.•Core-branched structure alleviates volume change and accelerates electron transfer.
