摘要

•A method to determine groundwater depth using ecological indicators is presented.•Muti-index, multi-scale, long-sequence data were combined with remote sensing data.•Statistical measures established relationships between poplar indicators and GWD.•A backward cloud model characterized ecological GWD uncertainty and randomness.•The optimum GWD for poplar in Hetao Irrigation District was 1.87 m.
