•An overview of conventional inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) schemes as well as more advanced coordinated multipoint (CoMP) approach for interference mitigation in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is provided.•An adaptive cell-coordination strategy is proposed for backhaul-constrained 5G heterogeneous networks by conjoining features of time domain enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (TD-eICIC) and joint transmission CoMP (JT-CoMP) schemes to enhance the cell-edge performance.•A HetNet-CoMP framework is suggested to combat interference in the adjoining HetNets scenarios in dense 5G networks.
