Augmented/mixed reality technologies for food: A review

•Applications of AR/MR for food is summarized from 111 eligible articles published since 2010.•Applications of AR/MR is closely linked to advanced technologies such as IoT, machine learning.•AR/MR is mainly applied for food safety, sensory, retail chain, education, and precision farming.•Limitations and challenges that hinder food applications of AR/MR are highlighted.•Future research needs and directions for AR/MR developments in food areas are presented.
