•Fe3C/NC catalyst with homogeneous Fe and N were prepared from ionic liquids.•5% Fe3C/NC has superior catalytic performance for styrene oxidation to benzaldehyde.•Uniform Fe3C nanoparticles in N-doped carbon matrix afford the catalytic performance.
