•The effects of martensite transformation (MT) toughening at different crystalline orientation are clarified.•The reasons for the change of phase transformation toughening effect at different temperatures are clarified.•The orientation dependence of MT toughening effect is stronger when the temperature is higher.•The martensite reorientation toughening effect is complex due to the self-accommodated twinned martensite phase.
