Differential accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in three earthworm ecotypes: Implications for exposure assessment on historically contaminated soils

•Distinct differences in PAH accumulation among three earthworm ecotypes.•Accumulation increased significantly in species with burrowing habit.•Amynthas sp. showed the maximum PAH concentration reported in an earthworm species.•Gut uptake was an important route of PAH exposure in historically contaminated soils.•Using KOW as a proxy for BCF in modelling cannot describe species-specific exposure.
