•This study examined temporal trends in the prevalence of mood disorders in the US.•The prevalence of MDE+SI significantly increased among US adults from 2009 to 2017.•Disproportionate trends were observed among some sociodemographic groups.•Policy interventions in mental healthcare are needed.
