Characterizing the calibration domain of remote sensing models using convex hulls

•We used a convex hull approach to assess model validity domain.•Convex hulls allow identifying unreliable model predictions.•At low sampling intensity, higher proportion of extrapolation are observed.•Prediction biases increase with extrapolation distances from the calibration domain.•This approach could help model development, as a complementary tool used in model quality assessment.
