•Mesoporous Na-RHO and Cs-MER were prepared by NH4F/H2O2 etching.•Both zeolites show significantly faster kinetics than their parent samples.•CO2 uptake and selectivities toward CH4 and N2 can also be improved.•NH4F/H2O2 etching is useful to improve the CO2 adsorption kinetics on small-pore zeolites.
