•The high-energy ball milling is adopted to prepare red phosphorus/diatomite flame retardant.•Diatomite with high specific surface area exhibits synergistic dispersion with red phosphorus.•A low exotherm polyurethne/watergalss foam with excellent flame-retardant effect are prepared by free-foaming method.
