摘要
•The degradation mechanism of acrylic resins during STEM-EELS analyses is investigated.•Mass loss and compositional changes are demonstrated during electron irradiation.•Degradation follows sequential radiolysis and knock on damage until acrylic specimen breakage.•EEL spectral evolution with accumulated dose suggests scission and cross-linking during electron irradiation.•Material loss by CO and CO2 removal due to the formation and evolution of radical species.
