Formation damage of sandstone geothermal reservoirs: During decreased salinity water injection

•Injected water caused the formation damage, including permeability reduction, pore-throat shrinkage, and water-wettability enhancement.•Compaction, fine migration, and mineral dissolution worked synergistically to trigger the formation damage.•Mineral dissolution weakened the mechanical strength of the minerals and facilitated the compaction.
