•Energy self-sufficiency in CAO systems were studied using Monte Carlo simulation.•The MPC-CAO system outperformed C-CAO and PRB-CAO systems.•Organic matter content and ambient temperature influenced net energy production.•CAO system integrated with matters capture exhibited 80% energy self-sufficiency.•Balancing energy input and output is the key of realizing energy self-sufficiency.
