Limits of performance of chemical looping air separation in packed bed coupled with electricity production

•Performance of chemical looping air separation in packed beds is studied.•A new scheme for chemical looping air separation is proposed with the oxidisers operating at an elevated pressure.•Results indicate that a single, adiabatic, packed bed reactor fails to meet oxygen molar fraction requirement of an oxyfuel combustor.•It is proposed to use multiple beds in series or adding heat radial along the bed length to overcome this problem.
