•Triarrhena lutarioriparia var. humilior is an amphibious species indigenous to the Jianghan Floodplain, China.•The apoplastic barriers of T. lutarioriparia var. humilior consist of an endodermis, exodermis, suberized vascular system, peripheral sclerenchyma ring, and epidermis.•The air spaces of T. lutarioriparia var. humilior have lysed aerenchyma and pith cavity in the roots and stems.•T. lutarioriparia var. humilior is a typical C4 species with Kranz anatomy in the leaves.•The Kranz anatomy, apoplastic barriers, and air spaces of T. lutarioriparia var. humilior facilitate its success in amphibious environments.
