•Femtosecond laser pump-probe technique measures the reflectivity changes of graphene/copper system.•A model assuming phonon-phonon coupling at graphene/copper interface is built and validated by the experiment.•Establish a new research paradigm to directly study the carrier coupling dynamics between 2D materials and substrates.
