•Plasmonic Au nanoparticles are synthesized in TiO2 crystal by ion implantation.•Third-order optical nonlinearity tailoring is achieved through charge transfer between Au nanoparticles and TiO2.•Enhanced modulation depth and optimized saturation intensity suggest significant potential photonic applications.
