•The UV/sulfite process efficiently degrade IPM with a high kobs of 2.08 min−1.•Complete deiodination was obtained in the UV/sulfite process.•eaq- was the dominated reactive species at weak alkali condition.•Effects of pH, sulfite dosage, UV intensity and HA were examined.•Degradation paths of IPM in the UV/sulfite process were first proposed.
