•Novel therapies of treatment of HF are urgently needed.•Preclinical and clinical studies show cardioprotective effects of KBs and SCFAs.•KBs and SCFAs are alternative fuels to failing hearts and have pleotropic effects.•Clinical studies of the therapeutic potential of both KBs and SCFAs are warranted.
