Addressing the issue of inter-patient variability by designing a controller is very common in the literature. But such designs become restrictive without explicitly considering the intra-patient variability. The robust controller design can use the information about the range of parametric uncertainty in type 1 diabetic patients when formulating the control signal. Furthermore, it can be guaranteed that the closed-loop performance of the artificial pancreas is robust against bounded time-varying uncertainties. This chapter considers uncertainty description into the model, thereby addressing the issue of intra-patient variability due to time-dependent variations in patient parameters. Two variants of robust observer-based output feedback controllers having optimality in some sense are presented in this chapter. The closed-loop performance of the resulting control system is validated through numerous numerical simulations.
