•SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater from Muharraq STP (Bahrain) correlates with reported COVID-19 cases in Bahrain.•Wastewater collected from COVID quarantine facilities showed high concentration of SARS-CoV-2.•Wastewater analysis can predict or confirm SARS-CoV-2 circulation through a specific population.•RT-qPCR is an effective method for identification and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA from wastewater samples.
