•The effects of three metal additives on the LTES system were experimentally investigated.•Fins LTES unit exhibit the best performance than the metal foam and shavings.•The effective thermal conductivity align with the heat flux direction can improve LTES’s performance.•The uniform metal macro-additives in the LTES are not recommended.
