French recommendations on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis secondary to bariatric surgery

•Bariatric surgery is associated with a 21-44% higher risk of all fractures.•The high-turnover bone loss is associated with compromised microarchitecture.•Diagnosing osteoporosis and assessing osteoporosis-related fracture risk should include measuring BMD using DXA.•If anti-osteoporosis treatment is indicated, zoledronic acid is recommended as the first line of treatment.•There is a knowledge gap on osteoporosis treatment in patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
