Outside Front Cover: High pressure air plasma treatments of barley seeds at mild conditions modify the surface chemistry with the formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species as well the induction of ions migration. Although barley surface becomes hydrophilic, no significant increase of the water uptake and topographical changes are promoted. Nevertheless, the plasma treatment affects the retardant intrinsic abscisic acid agent with the acceleration of the germination rate.
