•A layered watershed algorithm is created for simple-touching grains.•A splitting line detection algorithm is designed for complex-touching grains.•A thousand kernel weight measurement system is developed for various grains.•The system achieves a high accuracy (99.65 %) and efficiency (1.54 s per image).
