•Equivalent calculation method is proposed for the point-contact ellipse.•Meshing stiffness calculation model of plastic helical gear metal worm is presented.•Variation trend of meshing stiffness is obtained for plastic helical gear metal worm.•Calculation errors is verified based on theoretical model and finite element model.
