•The protein kinase superfamily is the core regulator of cellular signaling.•We identified and characterized the complete set of kinases of common bean.•Kinase subfamilies had a variable functional profile and evolutionary divergences.•Expression and coexpression patterns in kinase subfamilies were evaluated.•We could highlight a set of subfamilies associated with bean stress responses.
