Introduction to meta learning

Meta learning has become an increasingly popular framework for quickly adjusting artificial intelligence systems to novel tasks or data distributions. This chapter first provides a history of meta learning and the reasons for its recent renaissance. We then introduce the mathematical formulations of meta learning under three different perspectives. Finally, this chapter concisely discusses the taxonomy of different meta learning categories, including metric learning, optimization, and model-based approaches.
