•Pilot-scale THP reduced ARG abundance under different operating conditions.•ARG rebound effects were observed during AD following THP.•THP at 165 ℃ resulted in significant ARG reduction compared to those at 135 ℃.•Shorter digester SRT, blended sludge as feedstock resulted in more ARG reduction.
