•Recycled Carbon Fibers (rCF) can be easily dispersed in the thermoplastic matrix.•Composite filaments with rCF showed the same processability of vCF ones.•Recycling process of CFs did not affect mechanical properties of composites.•rCF can replace virgin CFs for eco-sustainable FDM applications.
