Progress on ecosystem accounting in Europe

•In 27 of the 29 considered European countries, at least one ecosystem account (EA) was identified.•The EA progress of the individual countries differs considerably.•The majority of the identified EA were developed at a national spatial scale.•The highest numbers of core and thematic ecosystem accounts were identified in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.•The most frequently developed thematic account was the carbon account.
