•Surface functionalized agrowaste was used for Cu2+ scavenging.•Optimum adsorption of Cu2+ was at pH 5.0.•Maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for the system was 73.53 mg/g.•Multilayer adsorption characterized the Cu2+-EIG system.•Ordinary least square estimator (OLSE) validates Cu2+-EIG system process economy.
