•A new time-discrete algorithm for measuring power system frequency.•Estimator based on a linear prediction of samples and a least squares method.•Digital sample filtration and averaging of measurement results.•The algorithm is simple, fast and resistance to noise occurring in an analysed signal.•Tracking of frequencies of power system with an error lower than 0.1 Hz.
