•A novel MoSx/MnWO4 hybrid was constructed for boosting photocatalytic O2 evolution.•A charge accumulation interlayer between MoSx and MnWO4 accelerates charge transportation.•The S–scheme heterostructure promotes efficiencies of sunlight utilization and charge separation.
