•Reservoir flood control operation considering spillway gate scheduling is studied.•The influence of the reservoir water level and opening degree on the gates’ discharge capacity are considered.•An MILP based model is developed through several linearization strategies.•The proposed model can produce more executable flood control operation scheduling.
