•Three tetraaryldiamines were synthesized and used as an ETL for OPVs.•Tetraaryldiamine interlayers enhanced the PCE of OPVs by up to 20%.•Tetraaryldiamine contributed better charge transport with lower energy loss.•OPVs with tetraaryldiamines showed a superior environmental stability.
