Do Katie and Connor tell better stories than Aaliyah and Jamaal? Teachers’ perceptions of children's oral narratives as a function of race and narrative quality

•Teachers judge Black and White children's stories similarly for higher-quality stories.•White teachers rate stories by Black children lower than White children when quality is low.•When teacher-child race matches, rating differences for higher- and lower-quality stories are smaller.•Black teachers prioritize creativity in judgments; White teachers focus on language skills.
