Setup of human liver-chips integrating 3D models, microwells and a standardized microfluidic platform as proof-of-concept study to support drug evaluation

•Microwells allow combining up to 100 human primary liver spheroids in one system.•The model is set up in a 96-well (liver-plate) and microfluidic format (liver-chip).•Cell viability and CYP activity of liver-chips are comparable to liver spheroids.•Liver-chips can be deployed for multiparametric drug safety testing.•Liver-chips possess a higher metabolic capacity versus single liver spheroids.
