•O2-dithering improves CH4 and NO conversion over Pd/Al2O3.•Effect of O2 pulses on the catalytic activity can be predicted reliably.•The prediction relies on the O2 concentration present in the reactive feed.•The O2 pulses are beneficial to the activity when CH4 steam reforming is promoted.
