•Ni/CeO2 was prepared by in situ carbon templating and reduction with hydrogen.•Ni/CeO2 shows a medium-strong acidity by temperature-programmed desorption of NH3.•The main active hydrogen species over Ni/CeO2 with H2 are H…H and H+.•Ni/CeO2 effectively catalyzed the -CO bond cleavage and BR hydrogenation under MCs.
