Cost-Effective and Compact Antenna Applications Using Planar HIS: Research Survey and Possibility

This paper presents cost-effective and compact antenna applications at microwave and millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum using planar high-impedance surfaces (HIS). First, as an antenna element in this paper, a compact inverted-L antenna (ILA) operating at microwave spectrum has been presented using with one-dimensional electromagnetic bandgap (1-D EBG) ground structures fabricated on FR-4 PCB. The 1-D EBG ground structures of ILA within a compact size (0.21λ 0 ×0.32 λ 0 can serve as HIS with slow-wave behavior. The proposed antenna topology exhibits high end-fire gain in broadband, despite absence of auxiliary circuits. Second, the compressed mm-Wave phased array fabricated on single-layer FR-4 PCB has been presented by incorporating the antenna topology and via wall structures as HIS characteristics. The phased array antenna consists of low-coupled radiating element in linear array configuration with 0.39λ 0 inter-element spacing. Finally, a mmWave mobile device prototype equipped with two sets of the 8element phased arrays is realized and characterized using the proposed antenna topology and low-loss grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW) feeding networks with via fences.
