•Successfully synthesized Co3O4 hexagonal by using NH4F as structure-directing agent.•The Co3O4 sensor revealed the highest response of 23.32 to 100 ppm acetone at 150 °C.•The gas sensor manifests satisfied humidity resistance and low detection limit.•The adsorption energies simulated and calculated by DFT.
